Across the country, thousands of menus continue to include fish species that are widely regarded as threatened.

Shark off menuAmong these are swordfish, marlin, shark, monkfish, skate (rays) and warm water prawns (king and tiger).

Each is named as a species that either can no longer tolerate current levels of fishing without stocks becoming close to collapse or involves a fishing method deemed indiscriminate or destructive.

While Bite-Back is not alone in its recommendation that consumers should avoid eating these fish it is the first marine conservation organisation that aims to empower individuals with the tools and support to inspire retailers to rethink the fish they sell.

    GUIDE TO RECRUITING A RESTAURANT

  • Remember it’s likely the restaurant is unaware of an issue

  • Ask to speak with the manager

  • Choose a calm, educated and motivational approach to the discussion

  • Download the appropriate fish fact pdf

  • Share your knowledge about the status of the fish in question

  • Explain why you want the restaurant to stop serving the item(s)

  • Inform them that you’ll no longer eat there until the menu changes

  • Tell Bite-Back about your experience and we’ll do our best to support you

  • Always remain polite and positive

  • Keep returning and encourage change

Already dozens of restaurants have been motivated to change their menus to reflect their new understanding of an issue. It can be done. Bite-Back is doing it.
